Business Objectives and Values
Mission Statement
The BioAPI Consortium was formed to develop a widely available and widely accepted API that will serve for various biometric technologies. The intent is to:
- Work with industry biometric solution developers, software developers, and system integrators to leverage existing standards to facilitate easy adoption and implementation.
- Develop an OS independent standard.
- Make the API biometric independent.
- Support a broad range of applications.
Implementation of the BioAPI will enable:
- Rapid development of applications employing biometrics
- Flexible deployment of biometrics across platforms and operating systems
- Improved ability to exploit price performance advances in biometrics
- Enhanced implementation of multiple biometric alternatives (fingerprint, voice, face, iris, etc.)
The BioAPI will enable these business benefits by providing:
- Simple application interfaces
- Standard access methods to biometric functions, algorithms, and devices
- Robust biometric data management and storage
- Standard methods of managing biometric data and technology types
- Support for biometric verification and identification in distributed computing environments
Implementation of BioAPI will provide value to:
- Industry security administrators
- System Integrators and value added resellers
- Application developers
- End users of biometric technologies
Steering Committee
The Consortium has a seven member Steering Committee, elected annually, consisting of:

- Jim Cambier, Treasurer
- Steve Vinsik, Secretary (Unisys)
- Fernando Podio (NIST)
- Colin Soutar (Bioscrypt)
- Manny Novoa (Compaq)
- Mark Stafford (Infineon)
