BioAPI Consortium

ISO SC 37 Projects

The following international projects relate to ISO/IEC 19784-1 (BioAPI Ver 2.0).  It should be noted that ISO/IEC 19784 is a multi-part standard, with the first part comprising the base specification itself and subsequent parts defining additional capabilities. (See 2.0 Version Description for information regarding the architecture of the BioAPI 2.0.)

ISO/IEC 19784-2 – Biometric application programming interface – Part 2: Archive Function Provider Interface.  This part specifies the lower-level interface (or FPI) for integrating archive BioAPI units (BSP managed biometric data storage).  This standard has completed Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) balloting and has been approved for publication.

ISO/IEC 19784-3 – Biometric application programming interface – Part 3:  BioAPI Lite.  This new part, still in its very early stages, will define a streamlined, hardware communication (interface) protocol for embedded biometric modules.

ISO/IEC 19784-4 – Biometric application programming interface – Part 4: Sensor Function Provider Interface.  This part specifies the lower-level interface (or FPI) for integrating sensor BioAPI units (BSP managed biometric capture devices).  This project is still in its very early stages.

Amendment 1 to 19784-1, BioGUI.  This amendment enhances the application controlled GUI option of BioAPI.  It has completed Final Draft Amendment balloting and has been approved and is moving towards publication.

Amendment 2 to 19784-1, Frameworkless B ioAPI.  This amendment will provide architectural support and conformance category for minimal implementations intended for biometric modules embedded within small but capable platforms, such as PDAs and cell phones.  This amendment is still in its early stages

Amendment 3 to 19784-1, Security support.  This amendment, recently initiated, will extend BioAPI security to support exchange of security certificates and assertions.

ISO/IEC 24708, BioAPI Interworking Protocol.  A joint project of ISO and ITU-T, this draft standard specifies the use of BioAPI across networks.  It is currently at Final Committee Draft (FCD) stage.

ISO/IEC 24709, BioAPI Conformance Testing.  This standard specifies the methodology and test assertions for testing conformance of Biometric Service Providers (BSPs) to the 19784-1 BioAPI specification.  This standard consists of 4 parts at various levels of progression:
